EBobB: You can put it on RSS.

JohnWD: Am I warm if I found my way to: Writing for Webheads is a community
of online language learners and teachers. Members have met each Sunday
noonGMT online at http://www.tappedin.org/ since 1998.

BarbaraS1: I have it set so that I just log in to see the comments

DennisOl: Hi, Vance and EB.

EBobB: Mr. Travelin Vance has entered the room.

billc: Hi Vance

VanceS: hi all

BarbaraS1 smiles

BarbaraS1: we are introducing John to the webhead group

EBobB: Hi Dennis....how goes it.

BarbaraS1: he might be making tea

DennisOl: Doing OK, EB. How about you?

BarbaraS1: Dennis, that is

EBobB: John is an old friend, and one who is quite knowledgable about wikis.

BarbaraS1: oh back?

BarbaraS1: sorry,

VanceS: I'm fiddling with the webcast stuff

BarbaraS1: hows the tea

ClaireB: hi vance

DennisOl: And hi again from me.

ClaireB: it's good to have a wiki expert here

VanceS hugs, shakes hands, bows, etc

BarbaraS1: Vance it's not writing for webheads he wants, is it?

DennisOl chuckles

BarbaraS1: he wants to join the yahoo group

VanceS: no, webheads in action

BarbaraS1: yes that's it

JohnWD: no, I was just along for the ride, tracking the world of wikis, as
they grew, started back in 97

DennisOl: I didn't realize wikis had been around that long.

VanceS: Hi John, visit the YahooGroup for Webheads in Action and join

BarbaraS1: it doesn't cost a dime!

DennisOl: Which one, Vance?

ClaireB: not even a dime

DennisOl: What a bargain, huh?

VanceS: at http://webheads.info

VanceS: upper left corner

VanceS: webheads in action yahoo group

VanceS: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/evonline2002_webheads/

JohnWD: thanks for the URL

VanceS: same URL where it says

VanceS: Join the Webheads YahooGroup mailing list

VanceS: in the center of the page

VanceS: we try to make it easy and obvious

EBobB: Or you can always snag the RSS and r un it through an aggregator...

EBobB: and make omelets

VanceS: yep, that's a good way

BarbaraS1: a lot of the webheads have been supporting each other for a long
time

EBobB: But that wont allow you to comment.

BarbaraS1: and many have met

VanceS: I should put the feed here on this page

BarbaraS1: in person

ClaireB: yes we have

ClaireB: like, I finally got to meet bobbi in 2004!

BarbaraS1: yes that was so nice

JohnWD: is there activity now in the Yahoo group or can I catch that later

BarbaraS1: it's not live action

BarbaraS1: just a place to post

ClaireB: it is pretty much asynchronous

EBobB: Someone, somewhere in the Yahoo group is always awake.

BarbaraS1: so you can do it later

BarbaraS1: true lol

EBobB: though they may not be posting.

EBobB: They know no boundaries.

BarbaraS1: do you chat there? I don't think there is way, is there?

EBobB: There are even Webheads on Mars, I am told.

BarbaraS1: of course

ClaireB: how about venus?

BarbaraS1: there too

EBobB: Well, there may be some Venusians lurking on the list.

ClaireB: sure, you know, men are from mars; women are from venus

BarbaraS1: true :)

EBobB: To answer that earlier questions, many webheads from the Yahoo list,
chat via Yahoo

JohnWD: in this chat the URLs don't seem to be live ... perhaps that is my
browser ... but in other chats, the URLs are "clicable"

DennisOl: I thought the Webheads were from somewhere else entirely!

EBobB: Though probably these days more of use Skype.

BarbaraS1: it's been blocked here, but recently if you already downloaded
it, you can check in

EBobB: Some use tin cans, and a long wire.

BarbaraS1: although the website it self is still blocked

DennisOl: The Multiliteracy webcast will be on Skype, right?

EBobB: Sorry to hear that Bobbi.

BarbaraS1: yes

EBobB: Can you still use one of the open source alternatives.

EBobB: Gizmo or

BarbaraS1: yes, Vance has a VPN

DennisOl: I'm amazed at how many places are blocked in Abu Dhabi (and
elsewhere).

BarbaraS1: on a couple of the computers

ClaireB: john, the urls are clickable here

BarbaraS1: oh, message from Vance....tappedin bombed on his computer

DennisOl: Oh, no!

BarbaraS1: he will try to join again

BarbaraS1: although I see him here

EBobB: Uh oh...

ClaireB: give vance our condolences

BarbaraS1: hehe

JohnWD: must be my browser is not up to it although I have been able to
"click" URLs in other chat set ups

DennisOl: So is the webcast just about to start?

BarbaraS1: i think so

EBobB: Friday, Verizon Cellular shut down the entire Dallas/Fort Worth area
in Texas.

DennisOl: Really?!

EBobB: And it happened earlier in the week in California.

DennisOl: Wow!

EBobB: It has to do with ATT and Verizon sharing Cellular towers.

DennisOl: Very interesting indeed.

BarbaraS1: here it's intentional

ClaireB: sounds serious

EBobB: Much business was lost, and a great many folks were in a panic.

DennisOl: Yes, I'm sure.

ClaireB: did this extend down to san antonio?

BarbaraS1: they say that skype is a against the moral or cultural values and
so it's blocked

ClaireB: well, it's all about controlling communication

VanceS left the room (signed off).

Room: TI_Reception

VanceS joined the room.

BarbaraS1: however, there is a monopoly on the interest and phone service

EBobB: Whether intentional or non.....it says something about how dependent
we have become on this fairly fragile environment.

VanceS: hi, sorry

BarbaraS1: it's government controlled

VanceS: turned on vpn and got bumped

ClaireB: aha

BarbaraS1: so they block anything that will seem like competition

BarbaraS1: welcome back

VanceS: ink

EBobB: Why do they block Skype.

VanceS: because it's there

ClaireB: it's a form of communication

EBobB: OIC

BarbaraS1: they are afraid of losing the revenue

BarbaraS1: I think

JohnWD: Skype is free in more ways than one

ClaireB: what is oic

BarbaraS1: that they wil lose money because we'll call on skype

EBobB: So the government owns the phone system.

BarbaraS1: yes, or it at least controls it

ClaireB: Bob, what is oic?

EBobB: Oh, I see.

EBobB: a result of too much phone texting.

EBobB . o O ( I used to type with my fingers, now I am all thumbs. )

DennisOl chuckles

JohnWD: will the video be at worldbridgges

ClaireB: oh, now I get it lol

BarbaraS1: will it Vance?

VanceS: video? You're asking a lot

DennisOl: Will the Multilit chat be at EdTechTalk, Vance?

EBobB: Or maybe we should just move on to Second Life.

BillGst3 joined the room.

EBobB: Hi Bill.

DennisOl: Hi, Bill.

BarbaraS1: there is some problem with the chatting i think

BarbaraS1: things usually get worked out though

BarbaraS1: hi bill

EBobB: John, the folks at Worldbridges have been doing some experimenting
with video-casting....live.

EBobB: It takes a lot of coordination to pull it off.

DennisOl: I'm going to the chat at Webcast Academy—in the EdTechTalk area.

DennisOl: I've thoroughly enjoyed the chat here, though.

EBobB: See you there shortly Dennis.

BillGst3: Hi all - finally found my way here (first time)

ClaireB: webcastacademy isn't letting me in

DennisOl: Take care, everyone.

BarbaraS1: bye

DennisOl: I had no problems, Claire.

EBobB: Ill wait here a moment to see that all get in that want in.

EBobB: Claire, what URL are you using.

nothing yet

DennisOl: Bye, Bobbi and Claire and everyone. I'll see some of you shortly.

ClaireB: http://www.webcastacademy.com/login/index.php

DennisOl: You can log in to the chat without a password.

VanceS: starting up the show

BillGst3: My question: any WIA folk in Mozambique or other Lusophone African
countries that you know of?

BillGst3: I know there are various in Portugal (where I am based also) but I’m
going to Mozambique shortly to do teacher training with English teachers
there and I’m wondering about ways of helping them get active online.

BillGst3: I guess I can put a question in hte Yahoo list

BarbaraS1: hi

BillGst3: Getting caught up: just been to check out the Webcast Academy.
Interesting as Ive been developing live active learning webcast for
technology students. First attempts ended up being done assynchronously due
to broadband access problems (students in Macedonia) but I'm hoping to do
more shortly here in Portugal where teh Technology side should be easier.

JeffC: are you meetING AT WORLDBRIDGES NOW? sorry.... lagging here....

NinaTL: She doesn't have Skpe

BarbaraS1: oh you have to have a headset?

NinaTL: I think I'll just say hello here!

NinaTL: nope

NinaTL: only to speak, I think

NinaTL: How are you Bobbi? How is your class?

BarbaraS1: lovely

NinaTL: How many kiddos

BarbaraS1: very sweet group

BarbaraS1: 19

NinaTL: not small!

NinaTL: all by yourself or do you have an aide

BarbaraS1: i have 2 helpers though

NinaTL: That's good then

BarbaraS1: yes its good

NinaTL: Any local kids or just internationals? or just Americans?

BarbaraS1: all nationalities

NinaTL: for example:

BarbaraS1: a lot of americans

BarbaraS1: a few locals

BarbaraS1: Korean, Swiss

BarbaraS1: French, Indonesian

NinaTL: I have a lot of different nationalities in my class this semester
too

BarbaraS1: Lebonese too

NinaTL: but pretty much only Middle Easterners and Asians, plus 1 Russian

BarbaraS1: what age group?

NinaTL: No Africans, no Latin Americans, not Europeans (just the lone
Russian)

NinaTL: They range in age from 17 to about 30

NinaTL: undergraduates and graduate students at UMd

NinaTL: I have a group of freshmen, a couple of transfers and some gard
students

NinaTL: *grad

BarbaraS1: that's quite a range

NinaTL: Yes, it's the grad/undergrad difference that is hardest to teach to

NinaTL: not the ethnic differences

NinaTL: The freshmen are so inexperienced

BarbaraS1: it must be tough

NinaTL: One of my freshmen is older though--he's 21

NinaTL: He's a tennis player from Israel and has done his military service
already

NinaTL: There he is together with the 3 Saudis and 2 Qataris

NinaTL: They seem pretty neutral towards each other though

BarbaraS1: i think they are their best ambassadors

NinaTL: It's a great opportunity for them to meet people from "the enemy"

NinaTL: I am Jewish myself

NinaTL: I must admit I don't generally tell my Arab students that

BarbaraS1: but when it comes down to it, we are all just people

NinaTL: Yes, of course

NinaTL: When I began etaching here I had lots of Arab students

NinaTL: I remember one lovely Jordanian guy who had been brought up in Saudi
Arabia

BarbaraS1: did you feel any bad vibes?

BillGst3: BTW - there is also a chat room over on the webcast space

NinaTL: He admitted to me (we became friends) that when he had first arrived
he was really frightened that Jews would try to kill him

NinaTL: Then he found himself in my class

NinaTL: haha

NinaTL: Who's over there?

BarbaraS1: in the webast?

NinaTL: No, I never did; I always got along well with them

BarbaraS1: not me

NinaTL: yes

BarbaraS1: I cant listen

BarbaraS1: let me check the chat

NinaTL: why not

BarbaraS1: i dont know...it's always the same problem here

BarbaraS1: with worldbridges

NinaTL: is it webcastacademy.net

BarbaraS1: yes

NinaTL: Well maybe I will srop in over there and say hi

NinaTL: then I will go back and visit with my sister

BarbaraS1: yes do

NinaTL: *drop

BarbaraS1: I think Dennis is there
